About the Training
The Luca Foundation delivers specialist grief training for primary school teachers and school staff, helping them to support children who are experiencing bereavement or significant loss.
Founded by Sharon Luca, a qualified grief coach, the training draws on professional expertise, lived experience, and evidence informed practice. It recognises that grief can affect children in many ways, including behaviour, emotional wellbeing, learning, and relationships.
Teachers are supported to have age-appropriate conversations about death and loss, respond to difficult questions with confidence, and create inclusive classroom environments where children feel safe to express their emotions.. The training also includes guidance on supporting children with SEND, children experiencing complex or ongoing grief, and working sensitively alongside families.
Teachers are also supported in caring for their own emotional wellbeing when supporting bereaved children.
Schools taking part in the training receive:
- Specialist grief training for primary school teachers and staff
- Practical tools and strategies for supporting bereaved children
- Guidance on age-appropriate conversations about death and loss
- Support for children with SEND and complex grief needs
- Advice on working sensitively with families
- Emotional wellbeing support for staff
- SEVEN copies of ‘Why Did Grandad Die’ books, a beautifully illustrated book designed to gently soften conversations around bereavement and help children understand death in a reassuring and accessible way
Our first grant to deliver training to 50 Primary schools across Coventry and Warwickshire, and the West Midlands came from the National Lottery, ‘Awards for All’, grants.
We work hard to secure more funding to deliver this training across the country.
